Westminster Council Launches Free Weekly Fitness Programs for Seniors 60+
Residents aged 60 and over can access weekly group exercise sessions at no charge through Westminster City Council venues starting this month.
How we reported this
Westminster City Council began free senior fitness classes on 6 July at multiple sites, with sessions limited to groups of 20 participants each.
The move follows a council review that found one in three residents over 65 reported reduced mobility last year, prompting expanded access to low-impact activities without fees. Older adults in central London face higher rates of isolation compared to those in outer boroughs, and these programs target that gap through scheduled outdoor and indoor options.
Venues in Marylebone and Pimlico
Classes run at the Porchester Centre on Queensway in Bayswater every Tuesday morning and at the Marshall Street Leisure Centre near Carnaby Street on Thursdays. In Pimlico, sessions take place along the Thames Path at Victoria Embankment Gardens, where instructors lead balance and strength routines using park benches for support. The council also coordinates walks starting from Paddington Recreation Ground on Saturdays, covering routes through Maida Vale.
Each program lasts 45 minutes and incorporates chair-based exercises alongside light walking drills. Instructors from the council's Active Westminster team lead the groups, drawing on guidelines from Public Health England for age-appropriate movement.
Participation Numbers and Next Steps
Council data shows 180 seniors registered in the first week, up from 95 in a similar pilot held in March 2025. The programs cost nothing to join, in contrast to private studio rates that average £18 per class in Westminster. Spots fill through an online booking system or by calling the leisure centres directly, with priority given to those referred by local GP practices.
Residents can check availability on the Westminster City Council website or visit the Porchester Centre reception for same-day sign-ups. New sessions are planned for September at additional spots near St John's Wood High Street.
