Shoreditch Parks Open Safe Cycling Routes for Families and Beginners
Marked paths through Shoreditch Park and along the Regent's Canal now give parents and new riders clear options for short, low-traffic rides.
How we reported this

Shoreditch Park added 1.2 kilometres of new segregated cycle lanes on 1 July, linking the park entrance at New North Road with the existing path beside the Regent's Canal at Shepherdess Walk.
Local families have asked for safer places to cycle after Hackney Council recorded a 22 per cent rise in short leisure trips on two wheels between April and June this year. The new markings respond to that demand while the weather stays warm enough for evening rides after work or school.
Marked loops at Shoreditch Park and London Fields
At Shoreditch Park the route forms a flat 800-metre circuit around the central grass and past the adventure playground. The surface is smooth tarmac with green painted lanes and raised kerbs that keep cars out during peak hours. From the north gate riders can join the Regent's Canal towpath, which runs car-free for 2.3 kilometres toward Victoria Park. London Fields offers a second option: a 650-metre shared path that starts at the lido entrance on London Fields West Side and loops around the cricket pitch before rejoining the canal at Mare Street bridge. Both routes stay under 3 kilometres end to end, so beginners finish without fatigue.
Hackney Council and the charity Cycle Training UK run free one-hour sessions every Saturday at 10 a.m. through August, with the next dates listed for 17 and 24 July. Bike hire at the Shoreditch Park kiosk costs £8 for two hours or £18 for a full day, including child seats and helmets. Transport for London figures show that 68 per cent of cycling injuries in the borough last year happened on roads with speeds above 20 mph, which these park and canal sections avoid.
Practical steps for first rides
Parents can start at the Shoreditch Park café on New North Road, collect bikes, and complete the circuit before turning onto the canal toward the Haggerston gate. Beginners should ride the outer lane first, where the gradient stays below 2 per cent. Riders who want a longer outing can continue on the towpath to Broadway Market for coffee before returning the same way. The council advises checking the weather app for rain, which makes the canal path slippery, and carrying a pump and spare inner tube even on short loops. Sessions and hire details are listed on the Hackney Council website under leisure activities.
