Islington Parkruns Draw Hundreds of Local Runners Weekly
Islington residents can choose from established Saturday morning routes that draw hundreds of local runners each week.
How we reported this
Highbury Fields hosted its weekly parkrun on 4 July 2026 with 287 finishers crossing the line before 10am.
The surge in outdoor activity follows the opening of new cycle lanes along Upper Street and the extension of the Islington Green Gym programme into three additional parks this spring. Residents report turning to free timed runs as gym memberships in the borough average £45 a month.
Highbury Fields and Caledonian Park options
Highbury Fields parkrun starts at 9am every Saturday from the café side of the park near Highbury Crescent. Runners complete two laps of the 2.5km grass loop that passes the tennis courts and the bandstand. The event is supported by the Friends of Highbury Fields volunteer group, which supplies the finish tokens and barcode scanners.
Caledonian Park offers an alternative 5km course that begins at the Market Road entrance and follows the perimeter path around the former prison site. The route includes a steady incline on the north side and finishes near the restored clock tower. Both locations remain within a 15-minute walk of Angel tube station.
Participation numbers and practical steps
Official parkrun records show 14,892 completions across Islington venues in the first half of 2026, up from 11,204 during the same period in 2025. First-timers register once on the parkrun website and print or download their barcode; no payment is required at either site.
Arrive 15 minutes early to hear the safety briefing. Wear a visible number if you have one from a previous event, and bring a phone for post-run coffee at the Highbury Fields café or the new kiosk at Caledonian Park. Check the parkrun app on Friday evening for any last-minute course changes due to weather or maintenance.
