Lace Up: Islington's Packed Summer of Fun Runs, Charity Walks and Community Fitness Events
From Highbury Fields to the Cally Road corridor, a string of outdoor fitness events is giving residents every reason to get moving this July and August.
How we reported this

The starting pistol is effectively already fired. Islington is heading into one of its busiest stretches of community fitness activity in years, with at least a dozen organised fun runs, charity walks and group exercise sessions scheduled between now and the end of August, enough to fill a weekend warrior's diary twice over.
The timing is deliberate. July is historically the peak month for outdoor physical activity in inner London, and local organisers have learned to cluster events before school-holiday chaos disperses the neighbourhood's most reliable participant base. This summer also follows the rollout of Islington Council's Active Islington strategy, a programme that has channelled funding into grassroots sport since January 2026 with a stated goal of getting 5,000 additional residents exercising regularly by December. Community events are the strategy's most visible output.
What's On and Where
The most prominent fixture on the calendar is the Highbury Fields 5K Fun Run on Sunday 20 July, organised by Islington Parkrun volunteers in partnership with the charity Mind in the City, Hackney and Waltham Forest. Entry is free, though participants are encouraged to fundraise a minimum of £25 for the mental health charity. Registration opens online from 7 July and, based on last year's turnout at the same event, organisers are expecting upwards of 400 runners across all ability groups. Walkers are explicitly welcome, the route loops the perimeter of Highbury Fields twice, finishing near the tennis courts on Highbury Crescent.
A fortnight later, on Saturday 2 August, the Cally Festival Walk sets off from Caledonian Park on Market Road at 10am. The event is a five-mile circular route through Barnsbury, Thornhill and the Regent's Canal towpath, organised by the Friends of Caledonian Park alongside Islington Fairtrade Borough supporters. Entry is £5 for adults and free for under-16s. Proceeds go toward the restoration of the park's Victorian clock tower, which has been scaffolded since March 2025 pending a £180,000 restoration project.
Elsewhere, Gym Box on Upper Street is running a free outdoor HIIT session series every Tuesday morning throughout July, starting at 7am on the forecourt of the N1 Centre. These are drop-in, require no booking, and are aimed specifically at people who haven't exercised regularly for six months or more. The sessions are led by qualified instructors and limited to 30 participants on a first-come basis.
British Heart Foundation's London North regional team has also confirmed a sponsored walk starting from Angel Station on 10 August, a 10K route heading north through Barnsbury and looping back via the Holloway Road. Last year's equivalent event raised £14,600 across 280 participants in Islington alone. Registration is £10 online and closes 3 August.
Why Group Exercise Works, and What the Numbers Say
The evidence base for community fitness events is solid. A 2024 study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that people who exercise in organised group settings are 26 percent more likely to maintain a habit beyond three months compared with solo exercisers. Islington's own leisure data, published in the council's April 2026 Active Lives report, showed that participation in structured community exercise among residents aged 35-54 rose by 18 percent in 2025, largely attributed to post-pandemic appetite for outdoor socialising rather than gym memberships.
None of these events require a significant fitness baseline. Organisers across the board are emphatic on that point: the Highbury Fields 5K, the Cally Walk and the BHF route all offer modified distances or walking alternatives. For anyone with underlying health conditions, the standard advice applies, check with your GP or a local medical professional before taking on anything new, particularly if you haven't been active recently.
To find full registration details for the Highbury Fields 5K, search 'Mind ICWF Highbury 5K 2026'. The Cally Festival Walk is bookable through Eventbrite. The Active Islington programme publishes a live events calendar at islington.gov.uk/active, it's updated weekly and worth bookmarking if you want to track what's coming up through September.
