Screen time and sleep: what the research actually shows
Forget the folk wisdom about phones before bed, the science is more complicated, and Islington's wellness community is starting to catch up.

Adults in the UK are averaging four hours and 37 minutes of daily screen time on their smartphones alone, according to Ofcom's 2025 Online Nation report, and a growing body of research suggests a significant chunk of that is happening in the hour before they try to sleep. For a borough like Islington, where evening fitness classes, late-night laptop sessions in Upper Street cafés, and the general churn of inner-London life push bedtimes later than the national average, the question of what screens actually do to sleep deserves a straight answer.
The renewed interest in sleep health is partly driven by a surge in wearable technology, Garmin, Oura, Apple Watch, that hands people granular data about their own rest cycles for the first time. It is also connected to a broader conversation about hormones and mental load that has been gathering pace across lifestyle media this year. Whatever the cause, the science has advanced well beyond the simple instruction to put your phone down at 9pm.
What the research actually says
The blue-light hypothesis, the idea that the short-wavelength light emitted by phone and laptop screens suppresses melatonin production and therefore delays sleep, is real but routinely overstated. A 2021 study published in Sleep Medicine Reviews found that the psychological stimulation of content, not the light itself, accounted for the majority of sleep disruption in young adults who used devices before bed. Scrolling through high-arousal material, news, arguments on social media, work emails, kept the nervous system alert in a way that a warm-toned e-reader did not. The light mattered; it just was not the whole story.
A separate meta-analysis from Oxford's Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience Institute, covering 41 studies and more than 11,000 participants, put the delay in sleep onset from pre-bed screen use at an average of 13 minutes, meaningful at a population level, but modest for any individual. What proved more damaging was total screen time displacing sleep altogether: people who reported four or more hours of daily device use were 58 percent more likely to report sleeping fewer than six hours a night than those using devices for under two hours.
Islington's response
Local practitioners are threading this evidence into practical programmes. The Islington GP Federation, which coordinates primary care across the borough's 36 practices, has included sleep hygiene in its long-term conditions management pathways since January 2026, with digital screen use now listed explicitly alongside caffeine and shift work as a modifiable risk factor. Patients at several Highbury and Holloway Road surgeries are being signposted to self-referral resources through the NHS Talking Therapies service based at the Andover Centre on Andover Road, where cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia, CBT-I, is available without a GP referral.
On the commercial side, Re:Mind Studio on Liverpool Road has been running a monthly workshop called Sleep Reset since March. The 90-minute session, priced at £28, focuses on wind-down routines and what its facilitators call "stimulus control", essentially retraining the brain's association between the bedroom and wakefulness. Attendance has held at around 22 people per session, suggesting the appetite is genuine rather than a January resolution spike.
The Angel and Upper Street corridor, with its density of late-opening restaurants and co-working spots, creates a specific local challenge: social and professional norms push screens and stimulation later into the evening than in quieter parts of London. Public Health Islington's 2025-2030 Health Inequalities Strategy identifies sleep as an under-addressed determinant of cardiovascular and mental health in the borough, particularly among the 25-to-44 working age group concentrated in Highbury, Canonbury and Barnsbury.
The practical upshot from the research is not an outright ban on evening screens. It is specificity: switching to low-arousal content, a podcast, a static e-book, a streamed documentary rather than live social feeds, removes the psychological stimulation that does most of the damage. A consistent wake time, maintained even at weekends, has stronger evidence behind it than any cut-off rule.
