Hackney Opens Five Free Outdoor Gyms Across Borough Parks
Five council-maintained sites across the borough offer equipment and circuits open to all residents at no charge.
How we reported this
Hackney Council completed upgrades to five free outdoor gyms and fitness circuits in June 2026, adding new pull-up bars and resistance stations at sites that now serve an estimated 12,000 weekly users.
Residents have turned to these no-cost facilities as indoor gym memberships in the borough average £45 a month and many local studios report waitlists through the summer. The upgrades coincide with longer daylight hours and a council push to increase physical activity levels recorded at 58 percent of adults in the latest Hackney health report.
London Fields and Hackney Downs circuits
London Fields hosts the largest circuit, with stations along the western edge near Mentmore Terrace that include battle ropes, box jumps and a 400-metre marked running loop. Hackney Downs Park, between Downs Road and Amhurst Road, features a newer cluster of equipment installed in 2024 that includes parallel bars and leg-press machines maintained by the council’s parks team. Both sites remain open from dawn until 10pm daily with no booking required.
Hackney Council data from 2025 shows park-based fitness participation rose 22 percent year on year, with London Fields and Hackney Downs together logging 87,000 visits between April and September. The same report notes that free outdoor provision reaches residents in lower-income postcodes at twice the rate of paid leisure centres.
Practical steps for first visits
Users can start at the London Fields entrance on Richmond Road and follow the marked route, or head to the Hackney Downs cluster via the path from the Downs Road gate. Equipment is inspected monthly, with any faults reported through the council’s parks hotline. Residents seeking guided sessions can join the free Tuesday evening circuit classes run by Hackney Sport at these locations from 6.30pm, weather permitting.
