Hackney Residents Discover Best Sunrise Spots for July Yoga
Hackney residents are heading to local green spaces before dawn to practise yoga and meditation as daylight hours peak in July.
How we reported this
Hackney Council recorded 420 early-morning park entries between 4:45 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. on 5 July at two monitored sites, the highest single-day figure since tracking began in 2023.
Longer daylight and settled weather have drawn more people outdoors at first light, when temperatures sit around 14 degrees and footpaths stay quiet before commuter traffic builds on Mare Street and Kingsland Road.
Two favoured locations
Clissold Park in Stoke Newington offers a flat grass stretch near the old bowling green that faces east across the cricket pitch. Practitioners spread mats on the turf at 4:50 a.m. to catch the first direct light over the plane trees. London Fields, closer to the canal, provides a raised section beside the lido fence where the ground stays drier after overnight dew. Both sites sit within a ten-minute cycle from Dalston Junction station.
The Hackney Parks Service opened its summer sunrise access gates at 4:30 a.m. on weekdays from 1 June, removing the usual 7 a.m. lock time until 31 August. A free drop-in yoga session led by instructors from the borough’s leisure contractor operates at London Fields every Tuesday and Thursday, starting at 5:15 a.m. and finishing before 6:30 a.m.
Numbers behind the trend
Public Health Hackney data released last month showed 27 per cent of adults in the borough met the Chief Medical Officers’ weekly activity target in 2025, up four points from 2023. Morning outdoor sessions cost nothing beyond the price of a yoga mat, while indoor studio classes in the same neighbourhoods average £14 for a 75-minute slot. Sunrise on 8 July occurs at 4:52 a.m. local time.
Participants are advised to arrive with a head torch for the walk from the nearest bus stop, to check the Met Office forecast for wind on exposed ground near the Regent’s Canal, and to leave the park by 7 a.m. when staff begin mowing schedules. Maps of the two sites and gate times are posted on the council website under the heading “Early access summer programme”.
