Hackney Swimmers Find Perfect Lap Swimming at Outdoor Rock Pools
Hackney swimmers are heading to established outdoor sites this summer for consistent lap lengths away from indoor crowds.
How we reported this
Hackney residents now have two main outdoor options for lap swimming within the borough boundaries. London Fields Lido on London Fields West Side reopened its 50-metre lanes for the 2026 season on 1 May, while a smaller rock pool feature at the north end of Hackney Marshes near Homerton Road offers 25-metre marked lengths for those seeking a different surface.
Summer demand has risen after the June Telstra-style network outage disrupted many indoor gym bookings across east London. Council records show outdoor fitness registrations in Hackney increased 22 per cent between May and July compared with the same period in 2025. The borough’s active wellness culture, with regular park runs on Hackney Downs and group sessions along the Regent’s Canal towpath, has pushed more people toward water-based training that requires no booking apps.
Two sites already in use
London Fields Lido charges £6.80 for a 45-minute adult session and keeps six lanes open from 7am to 8pm on weekdays. Swimmers report steady 1.5-metre widths that allow continuous lengths without constant dodging. At Hackney Marshes the rock pool, installed by the council in 2024, sits beside the Lea Navigation and maintains water at 19 degrees Celsius through a simple filtration loop. Entry there costs £4.50 and sessions run in 30-minute blocks to manage numbers.
Both sites sit within 15 minutes’ cycle of Dalston Junction and Homerton stations. Local running clubs have added Tuesday evening swims at the lido to their schedules, while the Marshes rock pool sees morning use by triathletes training for events at the Olympic Park.
Practical steps before heading out
Check the Hackney Council website each morning for lane availability, as both locations close during heavy rain. Bring a £1 coin for the lockers at London Fields Lido and arrive 10 minutes early to secure a spot in the rock pool queue. Anyone with a new training plan should speak to their GP before increasing weekly yardage, especially after the recent warm spell pushed water temperatures above 20 degrees at the Marshes site.
