Hackney Residents Flock to Outdoor Pools for Summer Lap Swimming
Hackney residents are turning to open-air swimming venues this summer for structured lap sessions amid rising demand for accessible outdoor fitness.
How we reported this
Hackney Council opened the refurbished lane system at London Fields Lido on 1 July for extended morning sessions that run until 9am on weekdays.
Summer temperatures have pushed more people outdoors after the June heatwave left indoor gyms underused, and the borough recorded 12 percent more park visits in the first week of July compared with the same period last year.
Two Hackney venues drawing lap swimmers
London Fields Lido on London Fields West Side offers six 50-metre lanes marked for continuous swimming between 6.30am and 10am, while the rock-pool circuit installed last year at the east edge of Hackney Marshes provides a 400-metre loop of shallow basins linked by short weirs that swimmers use for interval training.
Both sites sit within 15 minutes of Hackney Central station and accept the borough’s active-wellness card that waives the standard £4.80 adult entry fee for holders who log at least three visits a month.
Numbers behind the trend
Attendance figures released by the council show 2,847 lap-swim admissions across the two sites in the first seven days of July, up from 1,912 in the equivalent week of 2025, with the largest increase among adults aged 25 to 44.
The same data set records an average session length of 32 minutes, consistent with the 30-minute target promoted in the council’s current outdoor-fitness timetable.
Swimmers who want to try the Marshes circuit should arrive before 8am on weekdays when the water level is adjusted for lap flow, and they can check same-day availability through the Hackney Parks app that updates every 15 minutes.
