Hackney's Top 5 Outdoor Pools for Serious Lap Swimmers This Summer
From lido lanes to wild water, here's where east London's serious swimmers are clocking their metres as the temperature climbs.
How we reported this
London Fields Lido opened its 50-metre outdoor pool on 29 March this year, and by the first hot weekend of June, every lane-swim session before 9am had sold out within hours of release. That's the sharpest signal yet that Hackney's outdoor fitness culture isn't slowing down.
The surge in demand matters because outdoor swimming has moved decisively beyond novelty. NHS figures published in January 2026 showed that regular cold-water and open-air swimming is associated with measurable reductions in cortisol levels and self-reported anxiety scores, and local leisure operators are responding accordingly. Hackney specifically has one of the densest concentrations of outdoor fitness infrastructure in inner London, and swimmers who know where to look can get into the water seven days a week without leaving the borough.
London Fields Lido: Still the Anchor
The lido on London Fields, off Westside, remains the obvious starting point. Run by Better (GLL), it charges £5.35 for a standard adult swim as of July 2026, with a concessionary rate of £3.35. The pool is heated to around 25°C year-round, which makes it genuinely usable for lap training rather than a bracing dip. Dedicated lane-swim sessions run every morning from 6.30am Monday to Friday, and the 50-metre length means serious swimmers can complete a meaningful workout before the recreational crowds arrive. The lido's capacity cap, roughly 100 swimmers at peak session, keeps the lanes navigable in a way that an indoor facility this popular simply couldn't sustain.
Booking through the Better app is essentially non-negotiable now. Walk-up spaces exist but are sparse on weekdays and effectively absent on weekends from late June through August. The app releases slots at midnight, seven days in advance. Early risers with a phone alarm set for 12.01am will generally secure a spot.
Beyond the Lido: Clissold Park and the Reservoir Option
Clissold Park in Stoke Newington has the borough's other publicly accessible outdoor pool, a smaller, 28-metre paddling and leisure pool historically popular with families, but which Hackney Council has piloted for structured adult lane sessions on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7am since June 2025. The programme, delivered in partnership with Hackney Sport, costs £4 per session and has seen consistent sign-up numbers through this summer, according to the council's leisure activity update published in May. The pool is shallower at 1.1 metres, which limits flip-turn practice, but for aerobic steady-state work it is more than adequate.
Swimmers willing to cross the borough boundary by a few hundred metres have access to the West Reservoir Centre in Green Lanes, Stoke Newington. Operated by Hackney Council and Capital Wild Swimming, the reservoir offers marked 250-metre open-water lanes in a controlled environment. A ten-session block costs £95. Wetsuits are recommended below 15°C water temperature; this July the reservoir has been sitting at around 19°C, warm enough for a skin swim by most standards. Entry requires a tow float and a brief swim assessment on your first visit, a sensible threshold that keeps the site functioning as a proper training venue rather than a spectacle.
The combined offer, a heated 50-metre lido, a council-run leisure pool with structured sessions, and a reservoir with marked lanes, makes Hackney's outdoor swim provision genuinely unusual for an inner-London borough. Comparable boroughs like Islington and Tower Hamlets still rely predominantly on indoor leisure centres for lap swimming.
Anyone new to outdoor swimming or returning after a break should get a check from their GP before diving into cold open water, particularly if they have cardiovascular or respiratory conditions. The Better app and the West Reservoir Centre both carry health declaration forms, but a conversation with a medical professional at your local surgery, Hackney has 31 GP practices listed under NHS North East London, will always be the more thorough starting point.
For now, the practical advice is simple: book early, bring a tow float for open water, and get in before the school holidays hit on 18 July. After that, every lane in east London fills up fast.
