Greenwich's Outdoor Pools Offer Dedicated Lap Swimming Lanes This Summer
Greenwich lap swimmers are heading outdoors this summer to dedicated lanes at local parks and tidal spots along the Thames.
How we reported this
Greenwich lap swimmers filled the 25-metre lanes at the Greenwich Park outdoor pool on 9 July with more than 180 sessions recorded that day alone.
Summer heat and a push from the Royal Borough of Greenwich active travel programme have driven residents away from indoor facilities toward open-air options. The borough recorded a 22 percent rise in outdoor fitness permits issued between May and July compared with the same period last year.
Named spots within reach
The Greenwich Park pool sits on Blackheath Avenue and operates under the borough leisure contract with Greenwich Leisure Limited. Swimmers share the water with the park’s running track users who finish sessions on nearby paths. Further east, the natural rock pools at the Greenwich Peninsula Thames foreshore near Millennium Way offer tidal lanes that form at low tide. Local groups such as the Greenwich Open Water Club meet there on weekday mornings for coached sets measured against fixed buoys.
Council data released in June showed the park pool averaged 4,200 adult visits per month last summer, with adult entry set at £5.80 and concessions at £3.90. The rock pool area recorded 1,150 registered visits through the same period, tracked via the borough’s free permit system that opened on 1 May.
Practical steps for this week
Swimmers planning sessions should book park pool slots through the Greenwich Leisure Limited app at least 24 hours ahead. Tide tables for the Peninsula foreshore are posted daily on the borough website, with safe windows listed between 6am and 9am on 11 July and 12 July. Those new to the rock pools are advised to attend one of the free introductory sessions run by the Open Water Club on Saturday mornings at 7am from the Cutty Sark Gardens slipway.
