Dog-friendly parks that double as social fitness hubs

Brockwell Park now hosts organised morning circuits where dog owners complete bodyweight routines while their pets remain on leads nearby. Sessions run three times a week on the open grass near the park entrance off Brixton Hill.

The trend has accelerated this summer as more people seek low-cost ways to stay active without leaving their pets at home. Local council records show park permit applications for fitness groups rose sharply after May 2025 when Lambeth extended its dog-friendly hours across all sites until 9pm.

Two Brixton parks leading the way

Myatt's Fields Park on Knatchbull Road draws a steady crowd for its Wednesday evening dog-walk intervals. Participants meet at the central bandstand at 6.30pm and follow a 40-minute route that mixes brisk laps with short strength moves using park benches. The same group runs a Saturday beginners version aimed at newer residents in the Angell Town estate.

Further north, the smaller Rush Common open space beside Brixton Road serves as the base for a weekend bootcamp that welcomes dogs. The programme, run by a local collective called Brixton Active Paws, charges £9 per session and supplies weighted vests sized for owners who want extra resistance while their dogs rest in shaded areas.

Numbers behind the shift

Lambeth Council data released in early July 2026 recorded 1,850 registered participants across dog-accompanied fitness activities in the borough, up from 1,120 two years earlier. Average session cost sits at £8 to £12, well below indoor gym rates in the same postcode. Brockwell Park alone logged 340 dog tags scanned at entry points during the first week of June.
