Safe Cycling Routes for Families and Beginners Open Across Brixton Parks

Routes that stay inside park boundaries
The shorter loop starts at the entrance on Brixton Hill, runs past the walled garden and finishes at the café near the lido. The second route begins at the Herne Hill gate, follows the eastern edge past the football pitches and returns via the central avenue. Both stay on compacted gravel that stays firm after rain. Lambeth Cyclists runs free beginner sessions every Saturday at 10am from the same Brixton Hill entrance, supplying helmets and lights for the first twenty participants.
Rush Common on Brixton Road supplies an additional straight stretch of 800 metres that connects directly to the southern gate of Brockwell Park. The path was resurfaced in March 2025 with funding from the council’s neighbourhood improvement scheme. Parents report the flat surface suits children on balance bikes and small-wheeled cycles without needing to cross any roads.
Numbers behind the new paths
Transport for London counted 2,400 cycle trips through Brockwell Park on an average weekday in spring 2026, up 18 per cent from the same period in 2024. A family of four can hire two adult bikes and two child seats for £18 for four hours from the pop-up station at the park café on weekends. Sessions organised by Lambeth Cyclists cost nothing and run until the end of September.
Beginners are advised to start on a Saturday morning session at Brockwell Park, then try the Rush Common link on a weekday evening when traffic on Brixton Road is lighter. Riders should check the Lambeth Council website for any temporary closures before setting out.
