Brixton's July Events: Windrush Day, Youth Coding Workshop, More

Brixton’s community events calendar for July is the fullest it’s been since before the pandemic, with more than 40 free or low-cost gatherings scheduled across the neighbourhood between now and the end of the month.

The surge in listings-tracked by the Brixton Neighbourhood Forum-comes as Londoners look for ways to connect locally amid a summer of global turbulence. Typhoons in China, wildfires in Spain and a political crisis in Iran have dominated headlines. Relief, many residents say, can be found on the patch of grass in Windrush Square or at a Saturday-morning coding class on Electric Avenue.

Windrush Day and a new youth coding workshop

On Wednesday 22 July, the annual Windrush Day celebration returns to Windrush Square, organised by the Black Cultural Archives on 1 Windrush Square. The free event, 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., includes live music, storytelling and a family history tent. Last year’s drew roughly 1,500 people, according to the Archives’ own count.

Less than half a mile away, a new six-week coding workshop for 14-to-18-year-olds kicks off on Saturday 18 July at the Brixton Library on Brixton Oval. The programme, run by local non-profit Code Your Future, costs £5 per session-or free for residents of the Loughborough Junction and Tulse Hill wards. Organisers say 12 of the 20 available spots are already filled.

Also on the calendar: the weekly Brixton Farmers’ Market on Station Road, open every Sunday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the Friday Night Food Market on Market Row, which runs through August. Stallholders at both markets reported a 15% increase in foot traffic last month compared with June 2025, according to Lambeth Council’s economic development team.

Practical advice for a July in Brixton

With the Strait of Hormuz closure pushing up global oil prices, transport costs in London are rising. Bus fares remain at £1.75 but TfL has warned of possible cuts to night services from September. For Brixton events, the nearest tube is Brixton Underground on the Victoria line; several bus routes-including the 2, 3, 35, 37, 45, 59, 109, 118, 133, 159, 196, 250, 333, 345, 355, 432 and P4-serve the area. Parking in the borough’s controlled parking zones costs £4.80 per hour.
