Brixton Digital Skills Centre opened its first evening classes on 15 June at the Pop Brixton site on Brixton Station Road, teaching 180 residents how to use secure banking apps and video appointment systems.
The sessions come as Lambeth Council pushes its 2026 digital inclusion plan after central government cut paper form options for benefits and council tax in March.
Workshops reach Windrush Square and Brixton Hill
Trainers from the centre now run twice-weekly drop-ins inside the Brixton Library building on Brixton Hill and at the community hall on Windrush Square, where participants practise uploading CVs to the Universal Credit portal and setting up NHS app reminders for prescriptions.
One 62-year-old resident on Coldharbour Lane completed her first online job application after three sessions and received an interview invitation within a week.
A Lambeth Council survey released last month found that 62 percent of adults aged 45 and over in the borough who attended at least four digital literacy classes now handle at least half of their banking and benefits tasks online, up from 31 percent in the 2024 baseline.
Prices for the courses remain at zero for Lambeth residents, though places fill within 48 hours of each announcement posted on the centre website.
