Brixton Upgrades Sports Facilities to Boost Local Community Clubs
Upgrades at Brixton venues give clubs more options for training, events and gatherings that strengthen neighbourhood connections.
How we reported this
Brixton clubs are gaining new operational options from facility upgrades that allow them to run sessions and events more effectively. The new FA-approved 3G all-weather football pitch with floodlights at Evelyn Grace Academy is now open for community hire, while Ferndale Community Sports Centre received a premises licence to sell alcohol for parties and events such as wedding receptions.
Upgrades at Brixton Recreation Centre
Brixton Recreation Centre launched an Active Bowling tenpin bowling alley and VR multi-sports rooms through a £1.1 million Lambeth Council investment. Lambeth Council is providing an additional £1.4 million for the centre, which includes a £125,000 gym refurbishment due to begin in the week of 28 July 2026. These additions give local clubs dedicated spaces for bowling leagues, virtual training and group fitness that help sustain regular participation.
Anytime Fitness and Academy Pitch
Anytime Fitness opened its largest UK gym in Brixton’s Ivor House, a 12,000 sq ft facility that includes spin, HIIT and holistic studios. Clubs can use the space for structured classes, while the Evelyn Grace Academy pitch supports football sessions and matches available for hire. The combination of indoor and outdoor options lets groups plan year-round programmes without relying on a single site.
Licence Changes at Ferndale
Ferndale Community Sports Centre’s new alcohol licence expands its role beyond daytime sport. The venue can now host evening gatherings and receptions, giving clubs a practical way to mark milestones and raise funds that keep programmes running. Local organisations benefit from having one location that covers both training and social functions.
Clubs interested in booking the Evelyn Grace Academy pitch or Ferndale events can check availability directly with the venues. The Brixton Recreation Centre refurbishment timeline will be confirmed closer to the July start date through Lambeth Council channels.
