Islington Reallocates £2.1M Parks Budget, Upgrades Seven Wards in 2026

Islington Council voted 35 to 8 on 7 July to reallocate £2.1 million from general reserves to park renovations scheduled to begin in September 2026. The funds will cover new playground equipment, path resurfacing and lighting in seven wards, leaving three wards without scheduled work until the following financial year.

The decision follows publication of the council's March 2026 parks condition survey, which identified 18 sites requiring immediate safety repairs. National government guidance issued in April encouraged local authorities to prioritise existing assets over new capital projects when using reserves. Council papers state the £2.1 million represents 12 percent of the annual parks maintenance allocation.

Effects on Residents in Covered and Excluded Wards

Families in Canonbury and Highbury will gain upgraded play areas at New River Green and Highbury Fields by December. Residents in Barnsbury will continue using facilities last refurbished in 2019, with no replacement equipment listed in current schedules. Local transport links mean some households in excluded wards can reach funded sites within a 15-minute walk, though peak-hour bus journeys add 25 minutes each way according to Transport for London timetables.

Small businesses near the seven selected parks may see increased footfall once works finish, while traders adjacent to unfunded sites face unchanged visitor numbers. Council documents project the works will employ 18 local contractors for an average of four weeks each.

Timetable and Remaining Decisions

Procurement for the first phase will open on 15 July, with contracts awarded by 12 August. Ward councillors in the three excluded areas have requested a separate review of 2027 funding priorities at the September cabinet meeting.
