Camden Council Prepares New Local Plan with 11,550 Homes Target and Community Infrastructure Allocations

Camden Council is preparing a new Local Plan to replace the 2017 version. The plan covers development vision and policies up to 2041. It proposes a housing target of 11,550 additional homes, or 770 per year, for the period 2026 to 2041 and retains a 50 percent affordable housing target.

The draft new Local Plan was published for consultation from 17 January 2024 to 13 March 2024. An updated draft is expected for consultation at the end of 2024. These steps determine how land use and infrastructure decisions will shape housing supply and services for residents over the coming years.

Planning Decisions and Officer Allocations

Approximately 90 percent of planning applications in Camden are decided via delegated powers by officers. The remaining 10 percent are decided by the Planning Committee. This division affects the speed and scope of approvals for new developments that residents encounter in daily life.

Recent officer decisions from April 2025 include allocations for Community Infrastructure Levy funds for Camden High Street pedestrianisation. The same round addressed procurement strategies for mentoring services for children with special needs. These allocations link planning revenue directly to local street improvements and support programmes.

Community Services and Daily Life

Residents may see changes in housing availability through the retained 50 percent affordable housing target. Pedestrianisation work on Camden High Street could alter access and movement along that corridor. Mentoring services funded through the Community Infrastructure Levy aim to support families with children who have special needs.
