Brixton's Transport Patterns: Tracing the Path to Current Road and Neighbourhood Measures
Longstanding use of Brixton Underground station and bus routes provides the backdrop for later projects addressing traffic and air quality.
How we reported this

Temporary restrictions on the A23 Brixton Road, which prohibited vehicle stopping and closed part of the western footway from July 6 to July 8 2026 for water connection works, reflect the latest step in managing movement through the town centre.
Brixton Underground station usage
Brixton Underground station handles an average of 27,000 passengers daily and ranks as the ninth busiest in London. It also features the world's busiest scissors crossover. These volumes have shaped daily travel patterns that later projects have sought to balance with other modes.
Liveable Neighbourhood aims
The Brixton Liveable Neighbourhood project targets air quality and traffic congestion in the town centre. Its central focus lies on transforming Atlantic Road and creating low traffic neighbourhoods. This framework builds directly on the established passenger numbers at the station and the existing network of bus routes.
Bus network extent
Brixton receives 24-hour bus services on routes 2, 3, 35, 37, 45, 59, 109, 133, 159, 196, 250, 322, 333, 345, 355, 415, 432, P4 and P5, together with night buses N2, N3, N35, N109 and N133. The breadth of these services has supported continuous access while road-based interventions have been introduced.
Brixton Hill LTN outcomes
The Brixton Hill Low Traffic Neighbourhood reduced motor vehicle flows by 58 per cent and increased cycle usage by 27 per cent compared with February 2024 baselines. These measured changes illustrate how earlier low-traffic measures have contributed to the current set of restrictions and project goals.
Residents and visitors can continue to check Lambeth Council updates for any further temporary measures on the A23 Brixton Road and related streets.
