Lambeth Council Accelerates Brixton Regeneration With Three Major Initiatives
Actions on regeneration, community assets and facility management reflect steps taken over recent years.

Lambeth Council is advancing a Brixton Town Centre regeneration scheme for 49 Brixton Station Road and 6 Canterbury Crescent that includes around 280 new homes with 40 per cent affordable housing along with workspace and market infrastructure.
Regeneration Scheme Background
The scheme follows earlier council decisions to seek community input ahead of a formal planning application later this year. Community events are scheduled between June and September 2026 to gather views on the proposals at the two sites. These steps build directly on the council's existing Brixton programme work that identified the need for coordinated development around the station area.
Community Asset Listing
The council has listed Brixton Village and Market Row as an Asset of Community Value. This designation provides the local community with additional legal protection and the right to bid for the site if it comes up for sale. The listing forms part of a sequence of measures that began with prior reviews of market sites and their role in the town centre.
Facility and Public Realm Changes
Brockwell Lido transferred to in-house management by Active Lambeth on 1 July 2024, ending the previous arrangement. Separately the council approved a project to plant five semi-mature trees outside Brixton Recreation Ground that also includes permeable paving and sustainable urban drainage at a cost of £180,000. The project remains in the design stage.
These updates sit alongside a separate process in which Lambeth Council consulted residents in 2023 on changes to the Brixton Neighbourhood Plan covering the period 2014 to 2034, although that consultation applied to the Devon location rather than the London area. The current London-focused work continues the pattern of incremental adjustments to planning and management frameworks.
Next stages include the 2026 community events for the regeneration scheme and a public consultation on the tree project expected during summer 2025.
