Brixton Schools Tackle Safety Repairs, Mergers Through Community Partnerships

Corpus Christi Catholic School in Brixton will temporarily relocate 200 students in August 2024 due to RAAC concrete remedial work at the roof. Lambeth Council is consulting on proposed school amalgamations in Brixton, including Christ Church Primary with St John the Divine and Fenstanton Primary with Holy Trinity CofE Primary.

The moves come at a time when many cities are weighing how to keep classrooms open while fixing ageing buildings and adjusting to shifting pupil numbers. Brixton’s approach relies on short-term site shifts and local talks rather than extended closures, a choice that aligns with tactics used in other high-density districts where central funding alone has not covered every repair.

Concrete fixes and thin first rolls

Trinity Academy, a new Free School in Brixton that opened on the old Lambeth College site, initially enrolled only 17 pupils at the start of its term. The Brixton Learning Collaborative comprises 13 schools in and around Brixton working together to improve outcomes for pupils and families through partnership. These numbers show the immediate scale of the adjustments now under way on specific Brixton sites.

Evidence from the same period records the 200-student move at Corpus Christi and the 17-pupil opening at Trinity Academy, both tied directly to the documented issues of RAAC work and new-school launches. Such figures allow direct comparison with enrolment and safety data tracked in comparable cities where similar building materials and start-up challenges have appeared.

Partnerships that extend beyond the classroom

IPA and Brixton Finishing School partnered to strengthen pathways into creative industries for secondary and further education students via Advertising Unlocked 2025. The Brixton Learning Collaborative provides the umbrella for these and other joint programmes across its 13 member schools. The arrangements focus on shared resources and industry routes rather than isolated school budgets.
