Brixton's Transport Situation Reflects Station Volume and Lasting Impact of May Road Incident

Brixton Underground Station handles around 27,000 daily passengers on the Victoria line and ranks as the ninth busiest station in London. On 14 July 2026 lift replacement work that began on 6 July continues through 20 July and has removed step-free access for the duration.

The combination of sustained passenger volumes and the earlier closure of the A23 Brixton Road has produced the current pattern of moderate to severe traffic delays around the station. The Victoria line itself operates around the clock with Night Tube services on Friday and Saturday nights, adding to the load on connecting bus services.

Route changes after the May closure

More than 30 bus routes pass through or terminate at Brixton Station, among them the 2, 3, 35, 37, 45, 59, 133, 159, 250 and 355 plus night services N2, N3, N109, N133 and N250. After the serious crash near the O2 Academy on 26 May that shut the A23 in both directions, more than 12 of those routes were diverted. Those diversions remain a factor in the traffic conditions reported on surrounding streets.

The station is typically busiest around 07:00 on Wednesdays. In the past 30 days, lines through Brixton recorded 38 severe-status incidents, a figure drawn from operational monitoring that covers both rail and road approaches to the interchange.
