Brixton Workforce Development Encounters Scale and Sector Challenges This Year

The Build the Way programme will offer five Brixton residents aged 18-25 a nine-month paid placement at the London Living Wage with mentoring and qualifications in the built environment, starting October 2026.

That narrow intake reflects wider pressures on workforce development efforts across Brixton, where the total of roughly 11,300 jobs sits across 1,500 businesses that draw much of their strength from retail, leisure and food and drink sectors. Those sectors frequently deliver lower economic value added, limiting the pace at which training routes can lift overall earnings and productivity.

Existing Local Provision

Lambeth Council runs free employment and training support at Brixton Tate Library that covers CV writing, job search assistance, interview techniques and one-to-one coaching. The Brixton Creative Enterprise Zone targets 400 new jobs in creative businesses and a 10 per cent rise in local youth employment in those industries. The Brixton Central project is projected to create approximately 600 new jobs through regeneration activity.

These programmes operate against the backdrop of an economy that already contains a large share of public sector roles, which also tend to produce lower value added. The mismatch between the volume of existing lower-value positions and the limited number of higher-value training places forms a structural headwind for rapid workforce upgrading.
